Instead of waking up crowing about all of the landmark winning moments we witnessed at last night’s Oscars, all that is on anyone’s mind is the slap seen around the world when Will Smith attacked host Chris Rock.

Is it kind to make fun of a medical condition? No, of course it isn’t. But slapping someone when you’re a mega celebrity is not the course of action needed. Will Smith assaulted Chris Rock in front of the entire globe and then just got back in his seat and was allowed to not only enjoy the night but also recieve an award and leave to go party. This sets a dangerous precedent for allowing physical violence. Physical abuse is never the answer for cutting words. Will Smith could’ve defended his wife with his words, his Instagram platform alone boasts 61 Million followers. You couldn’t find words? In a deeply disappointing moment, the only thing that was worse than witnessing the slap was the allowance of his continued attendance. This morning the Academy says it condems his actions, but they seemed content to let the night play out after his outburst of violence last night. A true disappointment in leadership from within the Academy. That moment sent signals across the world that physical abuse is the answer to solving your issues. Will Smith gave a cringeworthy acceptance speech. He went on to stand on the podium and joke that his life was imitating his art as he was now the “crazy father.” No sir, you are a disappointment and an embarrassment.

“The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.” was the response given by the Academy. Personally, someone who comports himself with such bad judgement and deportment should have their Oscar revoked. That is not what it means to be an Artist. It is not representative of what someone who recieves an Oscar should be like. The seat fillers have more stringent rules for crying out loud. Not that it seems likely.

Whoopi Goldberg, a member of the Board of Governors who’s also an Oscar winner and former host, said as much on The View on Monday: “We’re not going to take that Oscar from him. There will be consequences I’m sure, but I don’t think that’s what they’ll do.”

Then what are consequences? If taking the Oscar isn’t it, it paves the way for future violence and the reception of awards.
